I worried about liking someone new more than enjoying the great feelings that come with a blossoming relationship. Overthinking is rarely a minor annoyance that interferes with your love life; it makes dating unbearable at times. Instead, take more time to get to know the person. Determine for yourself if you like them. In psychology, ruminating is when you think about the same thought over and over. And all of it only made me feel a whole lot worse. But this was at the same time that I was working on my anxiety.

After a week of letting these thoughts consume me, I started setting timers for how long I could think about things. I first came across the idea of grounding when I saw a therapist for depression in college. This will help bring your mind back to the present.

Often, overthinking lives in either the past or future. That could be keeping a stone in your pocket or tapping a door frame every time you go through one. Find what works for you. Your thoughts will control your mind until you stop letting them. Only you have that power. I found that I needed to become my own advocate for ridding myself of anxious thoughts. Become aware. Awareness is the first step in creating change. Name it. Tell yourself, those are just thoughts. Naming them as thoughts helps to interrupt the pattern. Is it true? Put those thoughts into your head. Adapt a mindfulness practice. Bring your awareness to the present throughout your day. There are several ways to be mindful. You can get a meditation app. Or you can create a mindfulness practice yourself by doing something three times a day for just two minutes at a time.

Listen to the video to hear several examples. If you tell yourself to stop thinking about something, it will only make you focus on that thing even more. Interrupt the pattern of overthinking by doing something else, like exercising, getting involved in a creative project, or talking to a friend about a different topic.

The next time you catch yourself overthinking in dating, practice these six steps. Before you know it, your overthinking brain will calm down.
